The University of Amsterdam uses a single master brand, comprising the symbol and the wordmark. This ensures everyone benefits from the UvA’s (international) brand recognition and reputation.

Beneath this, one addition may be included for extra recognition. We call this the second layer. The master brand and the second layer reinforce each other. The names permitted in the second layer were established in July 2019. Together they constitute the University of Amsterdam’s brand architecture. On the UvA logo page you will find the complete list, including logo downloads. Use of the second layer is not mandatory; you may also use the UvA logo on its own.

Short and long name

Academic disciplines, organisational units and research institutes may use two versions, depending on the length of the name in the second layer. This system is used, for example, in print, PowerPoint presentations and videos. We do not use this in overarching communications, wayfinding and building signage. In those cases, only the UvA logo is used.

The agreements at a glance

  • The master brand is available as Dutch- and English‑language logos.
  • When opting to add a second layer, external recognition takes precedence over the internal organisational structure.
  • The use of a separate logo is not permitted.
  • Degree programmes, projects, departments and activities are not placed in the second layer.
  • Names in the second layer are not abbreviations.
  • Overarching communications remain unchanged; they are not placed under a second layer.
  • For collaborations, the principles set out in the corporate identity apply; no second layer is used for partnerships.
  • Certain UvA units (public‑facing brands) have an Executive Board–approved identity and brand policy, aimed at markets outside the primary process and/or involving commercial activities where a separate brand policy/differentiation is relevant. Approval from the Executive Board must always be sought; the connection with the UvA must be established visually and in text.
  • The list on uva.nl/huisstijl of permitted second‑layer names is current. Additions to the list are formalised once a year in April by decision of the Executive Board. Requests for, or additions to, the brand architecture can be made via the corporate identity coordinator.
