Which documents do you need to submit? These documents are required to apply for either a VVR residence permit or an MVV entry visa + a VVR.

Required documents

For your immigration application, the IND requires you to submit certain documents. On this page, we'll walk you through the process of documents you need to submit. Please ensure that you give yourself enough time to arrange all the required financial proof documentation, as this is often the most challenging part of the immigration process.

1. A scan of your valid passport

  • Your passport needs to be signed. This is not required for minors (18 years or younger)
  • It needs to be valid for at least 6 months after the start date of your study programme
  • MVV students: scan all pages of your passport, including the empty ones
  • VVR students: scan only the personal page of your passport, making sure to include the signature
  • The scan should be in PDF-format, colour, and should not exceed 20 MB

2. Antecedents certificate

Download the Antecedents certificate form (PDF, 2p.) and make sure the form is filled in according to the following requirements:

Under 1. Declaration of the foreign national

  • Please fill in all the checkboxes fully with a pen or digitally
  • If you check “Yes” on any of the questions, please make sure to fill in the reason under “Have you ticked Yes for one or more questions? Then explain why.” Please make sure to be succinct and to stick to the facts

Under 2. Signature of the foreign national

  • Please fill in the certificate as indicated on the form and pay extra attention to:
    • making sure your date of birth is set to the European day-month-year format
    • filling in the place of signature as the place you are at moment of signature. This can be anywhere and does not have to be related to your current or future place of residency.
    • making sure the date of signature is not the same as your date of birth and is set to the European day-month-year format
    • making sure your signature is identical to the one in your passport
      • If your passport is signed using non-English characters, then you must also sign the Antecedent certificate in the same way using the same characters. Please do not use an anglicized name in these cases

3. Financial proof

The IND, the Immigration and Naturalisation Service of the Netherlands, requires you to provide us with financial proof showing that you have sufficient financial means for the duration of your study programme.

Calculate your required financial means

  • I’m an exchange student

Exchange students are required to show proof of sufficient living expenses for the duration of their programme. This amount is equal to €1,100 x the amount of months you will be studying.

    • For a 1-semester exchange a minimum amount of €5,655 (i.e. 5 months x €1,131) is required.
    • For a full-year exchange a minimum of €11,310 (i.e. 10 months x €1,131) is required. Please read further below for the various options on how to prove this.
  • I’m a degree student

Are you enrolled in a regular Bachelor’s or Master’s, OnCampus or Pre-master’s programme? Then you should make sure to have sufficient funds to cover your (remaining) tuition fees in addition to your required living expenses for a period of 12 months: a minimum amount of €1,131 per month, a total of €13,572 in addition to your tuition fees.

If you have already paid your tuition fees, please upload proof of the transfer of your tuition fees to the UvA bank account.

Ways to show financial proof

The following options are ways through which you can submit your financial proof.

Please note: you are allowed to use a mix of financial proof if you wish, such as a combination of your own financial means and those of a sponsor.

  • Own financial means

You will need to upload a bank statement and/or account statement from a bank account held in your name with sufficient funds.

In case your bank account has a joint account holder, please let the joint account holder fill in and sign the joint account holder statement (PDF, 1p.). The signature should be identical to the one in their passport. You will need to upload the personal page of the joint account holder’s signed passport as well.

    Bank statements must include:

    • the date (the bank statement must be dated within the last two months)
    • your full name
    • the full account number (all digits must be visible)
    • the account type
    • the balance: enough to cover your required financial means
    • the currency
    • the contact details of the bank, including address, phone number, email/website
    • and must be in one of the following languages: Dutch, English, French, German

The account must be a current, checking, savings, or deposit account. Certificates of Deposits are only accepted if the statements confirm there is no restriction on withdrawal.

We never accept time/fixed deposits, investment portfolios, mutual funds, trust funds, pension plans, housing plans, life insurance accounts, credit card accounts, loans from third-party financial institutions (only official student loans directly organised by a national government are acceptable), salary slips (proof of monthly income), companies as sponsors, nor gold or crypto currencies.

    Scholarship confirmation letter

    Scholarship letters must include:

    • the institution that is granting the scholarship
    • who the scholarship is granted to (initials, surname, date of birth)
    • the period during which the scholarship is granted
    • the amount of the scholarship. It is clearly stated that you will be able to spend the scholarship on your living expenses and the tuition fee of the UvA during your stay in the Netherlands
    • the name of the scholarship programme under which the scholarship will be provided
    • the date on which the scholarship is provided
  • Someone is sponsoring me

You will need to upload the following documents:

    Sponsor’s bank statement

    Bank statements must include:

    • the date (the bank statement must be dated within the last two months)
    • your sponsor’s full name
    • the full account number (all digits must be visible)
    • the account type
    • the balance: enough to cover your required financial means
    • the currency
    • the contact details of the bank, including address, phone number, email/website
    • and must be in one of the following languages: Dutch, English, French, German

The account must be a current, checking, savings, or deposit account. Certificates of Deposits are only accepted if the statements confirm there is no restriction on withdrawal.

    Sponsor’s support statement

Please ensure your sponsor completes all required sections of the sponsor's support statement (PDF, 1p.) by ticking all the required boxes and specifying the full academic year for which they will cover your living expenses.

    • Please ensure your sponsor does not fill in their own name when asked to enter your name as the student they will financially support. In other words, the sponsor only enters their name in the left column of the box at the top of the form
    • For study programmes starting in the fall semester, this period should be from September 1st to August 31st of the following year
    • For programmes beginning in the winter semester, this period should be from February 1st to January 31st of the following year
    • Exchange students should have the sponsorship period match the exact duration of their exchange programme
    • If your sponsor will only be covering your living expenses and you will be covering your tuition through other means, then your sponsor can leave the field declaring they will cover tuition fee blank
    • Please make sure the sponsor signs the form. The signature should be identical to the one in their passport or other form of identification

    Sponsor's signed passport

Please upload a scan of the personal page of your sponsor’s passport, making sure to include the signature. If your sponsor does not have a valid passport, you may also upload another valid form of identification such as a national ID card.

    Sponsor’s joint account holder

In case your sponsor’s bank account has a joint account holder, please let the joint account holder fill in the right column of the box at the top of the sponsor's support statement (PDF, 1p.).

Please make sure the joint account holder signs the form as well. The signature should be identical to the one in their passport.

You will also need to upload a scan of the personal page of the joint account holder’s passport, making sure to include the signature.
