Media, communication and digital technology affect people and their behaviour. In Communication Science, we study these effects and understand their role in society. How does advertising work? How do the media influence voters during elections? What is the role of communication in organisations? Learn why we use different forms of media and how important they are in our daily lives.
You can choose from two minor versions in English:
In the 30 ECTS minor, you explore the role that communication and media play in our daily lives. You study key theories of Communication Science and choose three electives to broaden your academic perspective. This minor is open to Bachelor’s students from all academic backgrounds.
In the 60 EC minor, you focus on how communication and media influence people across cultures and why different media are used worldwide. You also build a strong foundation in social sciences research methods, making this minor particularly suitable if you do not have a social sciences background and want to pursue a Master’s programme in Communication Science.
This minor in Dutch is specifically designed for Dutch Bachelor of Applied Sciences (hbo) students who want to transfer into the (shortened) Dutch Bachelor’s programme in Communicatiewetenschap to pursue a Master’s degree afterwards.
These minors do not grant direct admission to the Master’s programmes in Communication Science. If you're interested in one of the Master's programmes in Communication Science, please visit the website for more information on admission requirements and how to apply.
You can increase your chances of admission to a Master’s in Communication Science by following the 60 EC minor, especially if you don't follow a Bachelor’s programme in Social Sciences. The 60 EC minor includes more focus on research methods, but it still does not guarantee admission to the Master's programmes.
You can apply for these minors if you are a Bachelor's student and at the moment of registration you have obtained at least 60 EC on university level courses. These minors are also accessible for bachelor of applied sciences students, if at the moment of registration you have obtained 180 EC.
The registration period for a minor in the academic year 2025-2026 is 1 April - 13 May 2025.
