Study programme

The curriculum of the Research Master's Academic track is largely tailor-made by you in consultation with the study adviser and comprises two years of full-time study. You will study cutting-edge communication science research by combining theoretical courses about political, persuasive, corporate, or entertainment communication with extensive methodological coursework. You will also gain hands-on experience by carrying out communication research at an academic institution.

  • Individual study plan

During the Research Master's programme, you fill out an individual study plan which needs to be approved by the study adviser. More information about this study plan can be obtained from the study advisers.

  • 1. Substantive coursework

You will follow the mandatory course Advancing and Building Communication Science Theory, which lays the foundation for advanced understanding of theory building in communication science.

In addition to this course, you will choose courses from the four domains: Corporate Communication, Persuasive Communication, Political Communication, and Entertainment Communication. You can specialize in one of the domains, but you can also create your own individual profile by selecting any combination of theoretical courses from the different domains.

  • 2. Methodological coursework

You will follow mandatory courses on the dominant research methodologies in the field of Communication Science. These mandatory courses are Experimentation in the Social SciencesContent Analysis and Survey Design. The course Research and Data Ethics is also mandatory.

Besides these mandatory courses, you need to complete at least 12 ECTS of elective courses about the statistical analysis of empirical data. You can choose a remaining 6 ECTS out of all methods electives (from Communication Science or other departments at the UvA’s Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences).

  • 3. Research participation module

You will individually participate in an ongoing research project at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) for a total of at least 168 hours (6 ECTS). You can select a project to participate in from the many ongoing research projects at ASCoR. The Participation ASCoR Research and the course Evaluating Academic Research are mandatory parts of the programme.

It’s also an option to do an academic Research Internship for a maximum of 12 ECTS at a research institution.

  • 4. Dissertation module

The dissertation module consists of two parts, of which the Research Master’s thesis is the largest part. This thesis is an empirical research project, done individually, but supervised by a senior researcher at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research. The other part of the dissertation module is the Thesis Communication module, where you will present your thesis research findings to academic or lay audiences (e.g., an oral presentation, a contribution to an academic journal manuscript, or a blog).
