The Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law conducts leading research on the democratic rule of law, constitutional culture, and the relationship between citizens and the government. This research continually responds to emerging societal developments. Consider questions such as: Can courts impose obligations on the State to meet climate targets? Under what conditions may the government use algorithms in its decision-making? And what would be required to establish a constitutional court?

Research within the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law is broad and diverse. Our researchers’ areas of expertise include:

  • the democratic rule of law
  • constitutional culture
  • fundamental rights
  • the influence of European law and digitalisation on constitutional and administrative law
  • election law, migration law, and environmental law
  • administrative enforcement
  • public funding, such as subsidies and government funds
  • the intersection of administrative and private law, for example in public procurement and the restitution of looted art

Our researchers publish in academic journals, books, newspapers, and blogs, including the Burger & Overheid blog. They also conduct commissioned research and frequently appear in the media. More information can be found on the department’s LinkedIn page and on the profile pages of our researchers.
