'The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is the only university in the Netherlands that offers Actuarial Science on a Bachelor’s degree level. When I had to pick a major, Actuarial Science caught my eye. It was a programme in which I could use my aptitude in mathematics and feed my curiosity in the application of statistics. The career prospects also seemed excellent.'
'The lecturers are definitely top-notch. They will help you overcome study struggles. Quite a lot of them are also from abroad, which makes it easier to relate to them. The classes are relatively small. Here, you get to connect with fellow students and your lecturers. For me, this is what I needed to excel in my studies. What I like the most from studying in Amsterdam is the fact that it is a melting pot of people with different backgrounds. Feeling homesick is easier when you're surrounded by fellow countrymen and have easy access to your home cuisine. Did you know that the UvA has the largest enrolment out of all Dutch universities? This means it usually is not too hard to meet new people.'
'The UvA is a big institution with beautiful campuses spread all across Amsterdam. When 2 subsequent lectures take place in different locations, the bike ride between the 2 sure is enjoyable and rewarding. Don't forget to bring along your umbrella when the weather is moody.'
'Outside my studies I am a member of the VSAE, an association for the students of Econometrics and Actuarial Science. Being an Actuarial Science student means you are a hot cookie for prospective employers. A bunch of highly-sought students gathered in a closely-knit study association would only lead to great perks (e.g., social/professional connections, fun outings, book discounts, and so many more). It is almost silly to not join in. Don't miss the evening drinks where you can hang out with your study mates. Have I told you that the drinks are on the house?'
'My advice for students is: when in trouble, reach out! The university offers extensive support for its students with excellent staff who are ready to help you. Whether it is a bureaucratic formality or a very personal matter which may disturb your study progress, the university provides a safe environment for you to open up and to figure out an optimal solution.'
